Twisted Modular Lamp

Product Development Case Study:

My former employer Coffee Based / VerdraaidGoed asked me in 2023 to finalize and get ready for production a modular lamp model that two interns had previously designed. The groundwork was done by them yet the prototypes were not ready to be manufactured. It was my task to work with their ideas and ensure the design intent was preserved throughout all the product development steps while ensuring cost-efficiency and feasibility for production (this project also involved Product Management Assist tasks).

Both versions of the lamps are now for sale here: https://verdraaidgoedproduct.nl/de-wissel/ and

An intern (stagiaire) from Coffee Based did most of the initial Design work and solved many construction challenges and proposed the initial frame reinforcement and stroke-attachment solutions.
Double-design: decision to make a version from used train departure tables for the brand VerdraaidGoed and another version from proprietary bio-based material for the brand CoffeBased
Refine design: explore visually new options for the attachments and re-define the problem
Adjust technical drawings: due to very precise tolerances needed by the assembly method, all the dimensions had to be reconsidered
Manufacturing Possibilities Research: investigate various types of laser machines, study the interaction of each with the different type of materials, make Comb-Prototypes to find the perfect gap dimensions
Pattern the parts on plates: find the most optimal distribution of parts so very little material is wasted
Project management of Prototypes production: coordinate a few rounds of prototypes from various materials
Quotes: ask for & compare
Find and order Components
Assemble prototypes, test and improve
Packaging: design from scratch or choose existing box models.
Take professional-level Photographs and use for Graphic Design.
Make sticker Labels for various boxes (modular packaging system).
Ensure all Compliance Graphics are observed.
Instruction Manual: Design & DTP
Project Management: quotes and comparisons for printed materials
Product Management Assist: confirm quotes, make BOM price build-up in Excel
Final Production: assist with packing
